Fantasy & Folklore Library is an independent catalogue of public-domain ebooks, built for readers who value thoughtful curation and historical context. We bring together fairy tales, myths, legends, folklore, adventure stories, verse, and drama from around the world, making these works accessible to a modern audience without commercial barriers.
How to Use the Catalogue
Every book in our collection has a catalogue page with a direct link to its free Project Gutenberg source edition. You can browse by category—such as Fantasy Classics or Folklore—or explore individual titles through our detailed reading companions. Each entry includes a clear description, key metadata, and links to reliable sources. Where enabled, we provide contextual notes to enrich your understanding of the work’s origins and themes.
How Books Are Organised
Our categories reflect the natural groupings of traditional literature. Fantasy Classics gathers classic story collections and scholarly editions. Folklore offers tales suitable for younger audiences, while Myths Legends collects maritime lore and sea stories. Fairy Tales brings together poetry and plays with accompanying background material. Within each category, titles are arranged to help you discover related works, from Wigwam wonder tales to Pele and Hiiaka: A Myth From Hawaii. This structure allows you to move easily between similar traditions—for instance, from Ojibwa myths and tales to Traditions of the Arikara—or to compare different cultural treatments of a theme, such as the many versions of the Atlantis story found in Poseidon's paradise: the romance of Atlantis.
Metadata and Presentation
Each ebook listing includes standard bibliographic information such as author, title, language, and file format. We review metadata to ensure accuracy, but we do not guarantee that every record is error-free. Files are presented in widely used formats, and we note any significant variations between editions. Our goal is to provide a reliable starting point for your reading, not a definitive scholarly apparatus. Where multiple editions exist, we indicate the source of our text and any known differences, so you can choose the version that best suits your needs.
Contextual Reading Notes
Many titles are accompanied by reading notes—essays or summaries that highlight themes, historical background, and literary significance. For example, Maugis, ye sorcerer is introduced with an overview of its place in medieval romance, while Indian Nature Myths includes a discussion of the storytelling traditions behind the tales. These notes are written by our manuscript reviewer and are intended to enrich your experience, not to replace your own interpretation. They may also point you to related works, such as comparing the Seneca myths in Seneca myths and folk tales with the Algonquin lore in Myths and Folk-lore of the Timiskaming Algonquin and Timagami Ojibwa.
